Undefeated Volleyball Squad on a Mission

By Thomas Grubb | 5-0. That’s the APA varsity volleyball record as of Aug. 31, and third-year Coach David Barnes’ squad hopes to keep that final “zero” the same throughout 2017.

After winning the New Bern HS preseason tourney without a loss, the Lady Pats are looking to have an even better season than last.

That would be some feat since last year’s team made it to the state semi-finals before losing to Davidson Day School.

Under the leadership of captains Scarlet Combs and Hannah Scott Avery, the Lady Pats feel prepared with nearly all of their players returning from last year.

“Hopefully we’ll be able to do this year what we couldn’t last year,” said Avery.

The “other” Avery sister, Alli Grant, addressed the team’s mental state.

“Coach Barnes motivates us every day to go to practice,” said Alli Grant, “and he tells us we  either get better or get worse every day at practice. So we have to go with the mindset to get better every day and to use the opportunities that we get to do better and learn more and work all the little things so they pay off in the games.”

Today’s match finds the Lady Pats in Raleigh, squaring off against NCISAA 3A opponent St. Mary’s School at 5:30pm.
