Quilling the Competition
Parrott Academy participated for the first time in the Quill writing competition this past week in the Edwards-Hobgood Library.
Faculty adviser Mrs. Vicki Kennedy discovered the competition after Headmaster Dr. Bert Bright asked teachers to find competitions to help the school showcase students’ talents and, possibly, to defend the NCASA (NC Association of Scholastic Activities) competition cup APA won in 2016-’17.
“I discovered Quill after trying to find a live version of Quiz Bowl,” said Mrs. Kennedy, the APA Quiz Bowl adviser.
Parrott competed against eight other teams in the regional competition.
The top three teams from each of the three regions and one wild card with the highest score will advance to the state competition held Dec. 2.
“It’s kinda like a Quiz Bowl for writing,” said senior Katie Frank, one of the Quill competitors.
Parrott’s four-person team consisted of Frank, Alex Urban, Trang Le, and Annika Allen.
The alternate for the team is Emily Piwowarski.
Each student worked separately on a prompt, typed it up, and then their scores were combined to get an overall score for the team.
“Overall, I think it’s a neat concept, and it wasn’t too difficult,” said Le, “since I had my writing skills from AP Language to help me.”
Results from the competition will be released this week.
